On August 1 & 2, 2024, vegetation records were carried out to assess the plant biodiversity in the new Erythraia Park of the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete by Dr. Alexandra Solomou, Principal Researcher of the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems of ELGO DIMITRA. According to the records, a significant increase in the plant biodiversity of the park (herbaceous plant species) was observed, and in fact in a very short time since the regeneration of the area. The field work confirmed the positive effect that the regeneration and the new plantings had on the local biodiversity underlining the importance of the use of endemic plants in such actions within the urban space. Increasing plant diversity helps create a healthier and more balanced ecosystem, which can provide multiple benefits, such as reducing the heat island effect and improving air quality in the urban area. In particular, the positive effect of the new vegetation on the thermal load of the space was confirmed with thermal photographs and with on-site surface temperature measurements of the various plant species carried out by Dr. Nikolaos Prοutsos, Principal Researcher of ELGO DIMITRA. In general, large differences were found in the temperature of the plants in relation to the temperature of non-natural materials, such as cement or paving slabs, improving the thermal behavior of the space.

On June 17th and 18th, the final monitoring visit for the LIFE GrIn project took place, ahead of its completion in the upcoming September.

The activities commenced in the “Theotokopoulos” hall of the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion. Following the welcome addresses by the Mayor of Heraklion, Mr. Kalokairinos, and the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Gialitakis, the deliverables, works, and results of the project were presented. In the afternoon of the same day, a visit was made to the urban green areas of Heraklion, where urban greening projects were implemented to enhance the city’s adaptation to climate change. More than 52,500 predominantly native endemic plants of Crete were planted at the intervention sites.

The monitoring was completed the following day in the Municipality of Maroussi, where the LIFE GrIn team, accompanied by the respective team of the Municipality of Maroussi, visited the sites of the pilot interventions. Subsequently, the results were presented at the Maroussi Town Hall.

At this point, the LIFE GrIn project team would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Mr. Krzysztof Wójcik, Project Advisor from CINEA (European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) and Ms. Sophia Papageorgiou from the LIFE Programme External Monitoring Team (ELMEN EEIG), for their support throughout the program and their valuable advice for its successful closure.

As it states: “The project tries to contribute to the information, the integration of European and international ideas and practices to deal with climate change and the improvement of the institutional framework for the management of Urban Green Spaces. COPs act as tools to reduce temperatures (-5.5 °C in bushes and -3.8 °C in grass, with an air temperature of 42 °C), reduce air pollution and noise intensity, enrich groundwater, corrosion control and have a positive effect on people’s mental health.”

As he mentioned, until today, the Urban Green Spaces (UZS) are being managed without taking into account the climatic parameters, while the synergy between science and management in practice should be deemed necessary so that the Municipalities respond to issues such as:
 the assessment of UGAS vulnerability
the design of appropriate management measures and their implementation
monitoring the effects of climate change and the effectiveness of adaptation measures
